Finn Juhl was a Danish Architect and Designer, most known for his furniture design. He was one of the leading figures in the creation of "' Danis Design" in the 1940s and he was the designer who introduced Danish Modern to America.
The sculptural form of the Chieftains Chair is what makes it one of Danish designer Finn Juhl’s stand-out pieces.
Juhl first exhibited the chair in 1949 at the Cabinetmakers’ Guild in Copenhagen, during which King Frederick IX (the maternal grandfather of the Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark) sat in the chair, causing a journalist to suggest calling it the “King’s Chair.” But Juhl preferred a different name and replied, “You had better call it a Chieftain’s Chair.”
There is something both tribal and elegant about the shape of its armrests and its padded back with protruding wooden corners. Its seat slopes floor-wards and its back reclines, making it an inviting and visually stunning seating choice.
Our Replica Chieftains Chair is made of solid wood and top-grain Italian leather.

The functional and organic Finn Juhl No. 45 Chair represents some of the finest characteristics of Scandinavian design. The high quality craftsmanship can be seen in the shape of the frame and luxuriousness of the materials. The solid walnut wood frame is a mixture of clean lines and sculptural curves. The slight incline of the backrest promotes relaxation while a softly cushioned seat ensures optimal comfort. Upholstered in fine cashmere, the chair is available in black, red, orange or light grey. Use one as a reading chair in a bedroom or office, or place two opposite a sofa for a stylish living space.
The story behind the Juhl No. 45 Chair
Finn Juhl broke tradition with his No. 45 Chair by fully exposing the organic shapes of the wooden frame. The result was a distinctive and elegant easy chair that was completely unique from previous models. Unlike many of his contemporaries Juel had a passion for the extravagant and luxurious. This was to become Juhl's signature style and has contributed to his success as an international designer. The No.45 Chair created a buzz when it was introduced at the 1945 Cabinetmakers' Guild exhibition, and has continued to captivate audiences ever since. Described as the 'mother of modern chairs', the chair is a Danish masterpiece of furniture design.
